Hurricane Irene Project

Critical Thinking 

1)   What time of the year do hurricanes occur?  Why do they happen during this time?

Hurricanes most likely happen during the summer because that is the time the water is warm and allows the hurricane to grow bigger and stronger.

2)   How can the timing of the tides (high or low) effect the devastation of a hurricane?

Well if the tide increases the water level will allow the hurricane to grow bigger because more water will evaporate, also the wind of the hurricane will easily increase the power and height of the waves. Over all the hurricane will be much more powerfull.

3)   If an area is fully saturated, will a hurricane have more or less impact on an area?                                     

     The hurricane will have a bigger impact on the area because normally the hurricane would start losing power when reaching land but the area is saturated, the water will still evaporate and the hurricane will not lose any power it might actually gain some.

4)   How does ground water saturation affects rivers and streams?

It affects rivers and streams because if it rains or a hurricane occur the river will over flow. The water will have nowhere to go, that’s why it is usually not a good idea to build your house next to a river. This will all happen because the rain will increase the water level and the river will simply over flow.

 Reflection

1) What is something that u liked about this mini-project?

I really liked the fact that I learned about not only hurricanes but tides, groundwater, water cycle and flooding. We also practiced every one of them during do now’s, and finally had a presentation with one person form one of the topics which also helped me learn a lot more.

2) What was difficult for you in this project?

The hardest thing for me was to write those like paragraph about all the topics, because I am very bad at taking notes so when it was time to writ the paragraphs I did not have much written.

3) What would you change about your work in this project?

I really don’t know, I found this project very interesting and helpful, one suggestions would be to maybe have a little more time to learn bout the other topics.

4) How did this project help you learn about hurricane Irene?

This project helped me learn how hurricanes are formed and how devastating they can be. I now know why hurricane Irene happened, and also why it was not so powerful here in New York.
